General

One-to-one Tutorial

50 minutes

A one-off session to look in depth at concerns clients may have around their creative practice. This is tailored around the individual, and may include areas of development such as observational drawing, editing text and image, developing creative voice, portfolio reviews, cover design and page layout.

Where possible our tutorials are in person, one-to-one. In some circumstances we are happy to discuss arranging skype tutorials.

Set of 6 one-to-one Tutorials

50 minutes each

Over six sessions we will work closely with you at your own pace to focus on areas of development. In each session we will give feedback on your work, provide advice and will set targets to help keep you on track. During our friendly, nurturing sessions we will provide visual examples to help explain ideas and concepts. We will follow up each session with written feedback and proposed objectives to work on before the next meeting. 

Where possible our tutorials are in person, one-to-one. In some circumstances we are happy to discess arranging skype tutorials.

Learn to home screenprint with Pam Smy

Do you want to learn how to screenprint, but don't have access to a print room locally? If so, you may find this workshop on how to screenprint from home useful. Using a technique of drawing directly onto the screen (not with stencils or photo exposure) Pam Smy will take you through the process and help you produce a 2 colour screen print in a few hours.

Materials and paper supplied - all you need to bring along to our Cambridge studio is a design of your own to work from. If you are interested, get in touch with us at orangebeakstudio@gmail.com

From Observation to Imagination Part One


One day workshop (Cambridge)

9-5pm

This day, is the first of a two part workshop, focusing on introducing you to ways of beginning to link your observational drawing to your imaginative studio work. This is a practical workshop, and the day will initially take place in and around central Cambridge. We will introduce various drawing exercises, and be on hand for advice and feedback. These drawings will be the basis of imaginative image making back in our studio space, where we will also review the work as a group.

This workshop is run by Maisie and Pam, who will be present all day to answer any questions and give individual one-to-one feedback. We will also look over your work before the workshop to make sure we tailor the day to your own personal goals.

From Observation to Imagination Part Two


One day workshop (Cambridge)
23rd February 2019
9-5pm

This is a follow on workshop for those who have taken From Observation to Imagination Part One. This workshop will be spent in our studio space, near central Cambridge. Using work created from the first workshop, we will continue to explore different ways to develop imaginative drawing looking at techniques such as composition, tone, lighting, character and colour. We will also look at how materials can effect the feeling and story of an image.

Photoshop for Absolute Beginners


Half a day workshop (Cambridge)

Would you like to be able to scan your artwork, clear up basic mistakes, adjust the colours and prepare files to send to a publisher or upload on social media? This workshop will cover all of this!

Limited to four spaces, this workshop is based in our central Cambridge studio, please bring a laptop with photoshop on it. Copies of the notes for the workshop will be available to take away.

Developing Characters from Observation

This workshop will introduce you to ways to take your observational drawings of people and develop their characters and find out their stories. This is a practical workshop, and will begin with drawing exercises on location, in and around central Cambridge. The remainder of the day will take place in our studio space, where we will be looking at how to continue developing these characters. This workshop is for anyone who interested in learning more about character development, imaginative drawing and using character as a way to tell stories.

3 Day Picturebook Workshops, Cambridge This workshop covers, what we believe, are the essentials to help you make—or continue to develop—your successful picturebook. The three days will include talks about discovering your inspirations and creative voice, design, typography and the environment. There will be an exercise about character and a chance to experiment with a wide range of materials. You will also have two individual tutorials, with written feedback about your work.

Observational Drawing Days, Cambridge
A one day, on-location workshop in and around Cambridge. The workshop focuses on sharing the key skills we believe you may need to improve your observational drawing. There are various different drawing excercises throughout the day, as well as one-to-one feedback and a group review.

Cover Design Workshops with Ness Wood This two-and-a-half hour session includes a talk about successful cover design and a two hour hands-on studio session to help you work on your own book covers, with guidance from Ness.


Children’s Book Illustration Retreat, DevonIn August 2018, we organised and hosted our first illustration retreat—a five-day event held in a convert farmhouse in Devon. The clients had quiet time during the day to work on their books, writing and drawing, supplemented with a one-to-one tutorial each day from either Pam, Ness or Maisie. The evenings offered the chance for the whole group to get together, as we hosted talks and activities each night.

Picturehooks Conference, 2018, Middlesborough
We spoke at the annual Picturehooks Conference about design, drawing and character. 

SCBWI Weekend Retreat, Worcestershire We were invited to be the 2018 tutors at SCBWI’s weekend retreat. We delivered talks on character, environment, cover design in addition to organising and leading various workshops. We also had one-to-one tutorials with SCBWI illustrators, giving individual feedback on their work.
