2024 Shirley Hughes Sketchbook Award winners announced
Following on from announcement of our shortlist, we’re thrilled to announce the winners for the 2024 iteration of the Shirley Hughes Sketchbook Award!
Winner – Lucia Leyfield
The judges loved Lucia's sketchbooks - they felt they were sitting in the room with her, and that Lucia strongly conveyed a real moment in time. They felt the well observed and natural family dynamic was complemented by gestural mark making, colour and texture, to create warm and familiar scenes.

Runner up – Emma Glover
The judges loved the sense of place, light and atmosphere in Emma's drawing, and were highly impressed by her strong observational drawing skills - from the wonderfully observed characters to the stunning composition of the market place scene.

Highly commended – Agata Lučić
The judges loved Agata’s bold sense of colour, use of pattern and her observation of people in varied settings. The judges particularly enjoyed the scene of the figures on the bench, which had a real sense of character.

Highly commended – Graham Firth
Graham's sketchbooks were very memorable for the distinctive and honest approach he takes to observing his surroundings. The busy, bustling scenes have a real sense of movement and energy and the judges could imagine being stood inthose environments. The judges also enjoyed the snippets of writing around the edges of the page.
